Granite is a natural product that is formed from minerals and stones. These materials are pressed together at extremely high pressures and temperatures deep within the earth to form granite stones. Quartz is a man-made product made from quartz crystals and resin. It's pressed, heated, and colored to resemble natural stone. Both are popular options for countertops.
Quartz and granite countertops are both easy to maintain by cleaning with mild dish soap and water.
Granite is porous and requires a sealant upon installation to protect it against stains. This sealant should be applied every one to three years. Quartz does not require sealing due to the resins used in the fabrication of the slabs.
Different brands of quartz countertops will have varying degrees of heat resistance. Excessive heat will quickly damage a quartz countertop. Granite has higher heat resistance than quartz with the former up to 450 degrees and the latter up to 150 degrees. Despite these levels of heat resistance, both materials must not be in contact with hot objects for long hours as it stains and discolors their surface.
Both are popular options depending on your aesthetic and maintenance preferences. Engineered quartz tends to be more uniform and can come in lighter shades on demand. Granite countertops are typically rich in earthy tones with many natural variations and patterns to choose from.
